The power of the nib
“A man’s beauty is in the beauty of his handwriting. And it’s better still when a beautiful handwriting belongs to a man of wisdom,” an Eastern aphorism says. Today beautiful handwriting is reserved for the select few. Pressing the keys and moving the mouse we tend to forget how to use an ordinary ball pen to say nothing of calligrapher’s utensils, such as: brushes, reeds, bird quill, or metal pens. Calligraphy in general is perceived merely as a branch of aesthetics. However, experts believe the interest for the art of beautiful handwriting has seen a recent increase. This belief can be substantiated by the ever-extending collection of the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy.

Letters in Sokolniki
This museum is ephemeral in a somewhat scary way. Although a bold inscription that reads, “The Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy”, has a bit of a hussar-like style and catches your eye at the very entrance to Sokolniki Park, the place is so democratic the idea of the exquisite art of calligraphy will be the last to cross your mind.

Treasures of Calligraphy
“In the beginning was the Word,” says the Gospel according to St. John. It was the spoken word, however, the word that was kept alive as long as generations of people passed the word on from person to person. When the chain broke, the word disappeared. It only became immortal after it was visually recorded by means of an alphabet, a system of symbols where each was assigned to a certain sound and had a shape of its own.
