For any lover of the arts considering a visit to Russia there is a very special establishment that stands out as a must-visit. The world’s only museum dedicated entirely to the art of calligraphy was founded in 2008, hosting within its walls on a permanent basis the artworks featured at the first International Exhibition of Calligraphy. First of its kind in Europe, both the exhibition and the museum were conceptualized by Alexey Shaburov, private collector and entrepreneur.

Works, unique in their content and technique, will be on show. Among others, you will see calligrapher Andrey Drachenkov’s “First translation”, a Glagolic writing of John’s Gospel scratched in wax and An Vanhentenrijk’s works combining calligraphy with three-dimensional paper forms.

The Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy in Sokolniki Park is highlighting a handwritten copy of the Constitution of the Russian Federation, the Decalogue (published by Rare Book PH, the text of the Ten Commandments is printed manually on a 19th century press), Calligraphy on a Wing of a Fly miniature, etc. Within the forty-five days of the Fixed Event Period, the display will be completely reloaded, European exhibits gradually giving way to Oriental masterpieces.

On Thursday, the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy under Sokolniki Exhibition and Convention Centre will witness the opening of the fourth International Exhibition of Calligraphy. For the first time ever Sokolniki Park visitors will have a unique opportunity to virtually visit all four parts of the world.

Penmanship September 16, 2010 The World famous Mezuzah, the Golden Koran, the Holy Mantra as well as masterpieces by modern artists from more than 40 states were presented on the 3rd International Exhibition of Calligraphy.
The artist of UNESCO Nja Mahdaoui gave a master class at the II International Exhibition of Calligraphy which is now held in the Sokolniki park.

The world has not yet seen an exhibition of this scale containing: A calligraphic tapestry from Tunisia, petition (chelobitnaya) on birchbark in the Old Russian language, ancient manuscripts and letters, miniature handwritten books and artistic tools.
