The Famous Korean Calligraphy Artist at the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy

On March 15, 2013 the solemn Opening Ceremony of the new season will be held at the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy. The Oriental Calligraphy exhibition, dominated by Kim Jong Chil’s works shall be our special treat for all lovers of the art of beautiful handwriting.

The great Korean calligrapher will also be present at the Opening Ceremony, conducting an exclusive master-class. Kim Jong Chil is onу of the most famous Korean calligraphy masters, standing participant in many international exhibitions, including the International Exhibition of Calligraphy, winner of national contests, chairman of the jury in various international projects.

This is not Kim Jong Chil’s first visit to Russia, he has already conducted several master-classes here. Nobody knows how he manages to blend Cyrillic and Korean letters, quoting Aleksandr Pushkin and Leo Tolstoi. His work, dedicated to these titans of Russian literature and poetry will also be displayed at Sokolniki. Cyrillic script reminds Kim Jong Chil of a song, the Korean master is convinced that it is the Russian language that like no other contains multitudes of ideas worthy of depiction. Another of his know how is colour solutions. Traditional calligraphy resorts to the sole use of black, whereas Kim Jong Chil couldn’t limit himself with one colour after hearing a Russian song. One of his works to be showcased at the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy is dedicated to Viktor Tsoi, the legend of Russian rock.

Beside the large Korean section the exhibition will feature chefs d’oeuvre from China, Japan and Mongolia. Moreover, during the first days after the opening, you will be able to peruse a selection of calligraphic masterpieces from around the world within the framework of an additional exposition.

The Opening Ceremony for authorities and the media shall commence at 3.00 pm on March 15, 2013. All other visitors are welcome from 5.00 pm.

Kim Jong Chil shall conduct a special workshop for all guests on March 17, 2013 (2.00 pm — 4.00 pm). Master-class entrance fee — 250 RUR. War veterans and people with special abilities — free of charge. Exhibition entrance fee — 150 RUR; for children, students, museum staff, and school teachers — 100 RUR; for people with special abilities, retirees, war veterans and children under 7 — free of charge.
