On the initiative of the Association of Private Museums of Russia, the Department of Culture of the Yaroslavl Region awarded Yuri Ivanovich Arutsev, an outstanding calligrapher, public figure, founder of the Yaroslavl Historical and Genealogical Society, and founder of the author's school “Russian Calligraphy and Ligature” and the Museum of Russian National Writing.
Tokyo-born Fuad Kouichi Honda is widely recognized as one of the world’s top Arabic calligraphers. The native Japanese Muslim, who teaches at Daito Bunka University, has won numerous awards for his work, including at the International Arabic Calligraphy Competition. His most famous pieces use passages from the Qur’an.
One of master penman Michael Sull’s favorite things to write is people’s names. “Because so many people can’t write their names! They scribble their names. You scribble your name, you’re showing a lot of disrespect for yourself. I mean, your name is your most personal form of identification. You’ve had it since you were born. And you should write it well,” Sull said.
