The Days of Slavic Script “Pages of Times Long Passed”

Date: May 22, 2011
Venue: the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy
Time: 14:00 Entrance fee: common Museum ticket

The origins of this holiday are inextricably linked with the celebration of Saints Cyril and Methodius — the Enlighteners of the Slavs, creators of the Slavic alphabet.

The legacy of Cyril and Methodius had an enormous impact on culture of the Slavic states: Bulgaria (and through it Russia and Serbia), Czech Republic, Croatia. The writing developed by Cyril and Methodius had an enormous influence on the development of Russian literary works and book art. In the minds of many generations Cyril and Methodius have been the symbols of Slavic letters and Slavic culture.

Celebrating this ancient holiday the Contemporary museum of calligraphy will host a master-class under the title “Pages of Times Long Passed” by Yuri Koverdyayev, honored calligrapher of Russia.

The program includes:

Performance of Slavic calligraphy's masters: — Andrei Sannikov “Anthology of the Russian Cyrillic cursive handwriting” (with demonstration of writings on birch bark); — Nina Kozubova “History of the Slavic Cyrillic cursive handwriting and ornate lettering”; — Yuri Koverdyayev “Half-uncial Cyrillic book hand. How did they write in Old Russia?”; — Artyom Lebedev “Everything about greeting cards”; historical excursus into the origins of Russian writing; thematic exposition

All celebrations are held with the Russian Orthodox Church benediction.
