We continue to explore the streets of our city. Today we would like to tell you about a house that witnessed many historical figures.

Governor’s House (court), Spasskaya, 20

The house was built in 1796 by architect F.M. Roslyakov for the Kalinin merchant family – one of the richest families in Vyatka at the beginning of the 19th century. The wealth of the Kalinins is illustrated by the fact that it was their estate that was bought in 1806 for the residence of the Vyatka governors. Since then it is considered the governor’s house. It had two side wings with the governor’s office in the corner and the kitchen in the other wing.

But the building had a special destiny: it is associated with a lot more famous people than any house around it. In fact, all the more or less significant people who visited Vyatka in the first half of the 19th century had been here. Among them were A.I.Herzen and M.E.Saltkov-Shchedrin, who worked in the governor’s office during the Vyatka exile. The architect A.L.Vitberg, the poet V.A.Zhukovsky, the geographer K.I.Arsenyev, A.S.Puskin’s widow N.N.Lanskaya all visited this place at different times.
