Cultural Centre of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea opened calligraphy exhibition

An exhibition of Korean calligraphy featuring a renowned calligraphy artist Kim Byung-ki opened on October 7, 2019.

The artist has been actively promoting Korean culture in the recent years. In his visits to European countries and via international biennials he tries to give exposure to the specifics of Oriental calligraphy, and explain why it sits at the top of the hierarchy in the fine arts of the South-East Asia nations.

“The reason why my exhibitions are held in Korean cultural centres is that their key mission is to promote Korean culture all over the globe Today I would like to demonstrate as much of my abilities as possible to unlock the uniqueness of Oriental calligraphy in full,” said Kim Byung-ki in his welcoming speech.

His artworks are based on his own thoughts as well as on the quotes of great Korean and Chinese thinkers. At the opening of the exhibition, the artist demonstrated his skills and wrote “Hail peace and prosperity” on huge paper sheets in hanja and hangul, which are Chinese characters, and Korean syllabic letters respectively.

Lee Sok-Bae, the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Russia, opened the event. According to him, professor Kim Byung-ki’s art has been recognized not only in Korea and China but also globally. “I am very happy that despite his busy schedule the artist came to Moscow to have this exhibition and give a personal workshop. It helps shape a more complete picture of Korean calligraphy,” said the Ambassador. He also expressed his hope that next year Moscow would be able to host an exhibition featuring Korean and Russian calligraphy artists to celebrate the 30th anniversary of establishing diplomatic ties between the Republic of Korea and Russia. “Six years ago I was lucky to attend an exhibition in the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy. It impressed me a lot, and I am really pleased that today I had an opportunity to talk to the Museum Director,” said Lee Sok-Bae addressing to Alexey Shaburov, who came to the opening of the exhibition to see the artworks created by the Korean artist.
