Sakhalin People Learn How to Write Hieroglyphs

Free workshops in Japanese calligraphy have started at the Sakhalin Regional Library. This year, the first lesson took place on October 24 at the information center for international cooperation of the Sakhalin Academic Library (SakhOUNB).

The event was organized jointly with the Japanese Consulate General in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. Before the start of the workshop, the guests were welcomed by the chief librarian Olga Pyatnitskaya. She spoke about the activities of the information center for international cooperation and noted that such classes help not only to get acquainted with the language of the Land of the Rising Sun, but also to learn its culture.

Consul General of Japan in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk Kazuhiro Kuno in his welcoming speech thanked the library staff for their help in organizing the lesson, and also introduced his colleagues, the hosts of the workshop.

The event participants watched a calligraphy training video created by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, listened to a short lecture and tried their hand at writing Japanese characters. Together with the teachers, they wrote such words as "happiness", "peace", "spring", and "dream". The participants of the workshop took the best works for themselves.

Calligraphy workshops will be held at SakhOUNB every second and fourth Saturday of the month until the end of 2020. Classes are free, pre-registration is required. For more information, please call: +7 (4242) 45-25-47.
