Our calligrapher conquers British Higher School of Art and Design

On July 28, Oleksiy Chekal, a Ukrainian calligrapher, one of the International Exhibition of Calligraphy participants, was giving lectures on fonts and the art of calligraphy during summer intensive course at British Higher School of Art and Design. Aleksei told students about general taxonomy of strokes, about “love and hate” between letters in monograms and calligraphic logos.

Aleksei’s practical classes included letter sketches in composite fonts, connection between calligraphy and artificial font, preparation to the digital stage of the intensive course.

This summer fonts workshop was specially held for graphic designers and art-managers, whose work is practically and professionally connected with lettering and font design. All participants confirmed their readiness to become subjects for a series of art-experiments under the guidance of the best masters in the world of calligraphy, typography and font design.

Deep diving into the art of calligraphy will help to learn more about the evolution of handwriting and the original story of three forms of the alphabet, as well as to explore the influence of writing utensils on forming of printed fonts.
