May 24 is the Slavic Writing and Culture Day

On May 24, the Slavic Writing and Culture Day is celebrated in memory of the holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Cyril and Methodius throughout the Slavic world. The importance of the writing in the development of civilization history is difficult to overestimate. In the language, as in a mirror, the whole world is reflected, our whole life. The writing possibilities are not limited by the time or distance. But people didn’t always master the art of writing. This art has been developing for a long time, over many millennia.

Scientists believe that the Slavic writing was created in the 9th century, around year 863. The brothers Konstantin (Cyril after becoming a monk) and Methodius created the Slavic alphabet, which later became known as the Cyrillic alphabet. The main merit in this matter belongs to Cyril. Methodius was his faithful assistant. Creating the Slavic alphabet, Cyril was able to catch the main sounds of this language in the sound of the Slavic language familiar to him from childhood, and find a letter designation for each of them. By their activities Cyril and Methodius laid the foundation for the Slavic writing and literature.

On the Slavic Writing and Culture Day scientific conferences, readings, exhibitions and concerts are held in many cities. Festive services and solemn processions are held In the churches of the Russian Orthodox Church. This year, in connection with the coronavirus pandemic, all events are held online.
