The Holy Scripture in Calligraphy contest has ended its first round. The final will take place on October 15, 2009 within the framework of the II International Exhibition of Calligraphy

“In spite of our tight schedule I can say for sure the first round was a success”, said Pyotr Chobitko, the Presidium Chairman of the National Union of Calligraphers.

The artworks we have received from all over Russia and abroad prove that the contest topic couldn’t leave both amateurs and recognized masters nonchalant.

The finalists’ works demonstrate profound knowledge of the Holy Scripture and show how skillfully they master all the modern traditions of calligraphy.

Only 23 applicants ran to the final. They made their artworks in different styles and on different media: from paper to… birch bark.

All these art pieces represent the whole range of Cyrillic scripts: reserved and majestic Russian Cyrillic ornate lettering, light Russian Cyrillic cursive handwriting, all written both in classical and contemporary styles.

The contest is a living testimony to the fact that the good old Cyrillic Letter still has a big potential. Being the national endow, the Cyrillic Letter demands careful attention not only from professional calligraphers.
