A New Amazing Acquisition of the Museum

This month the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy acquired a new and unique exhibit: a handwritten Decalogue made of natural materials and issued in limited edition.

The Decalogue, or the Word of God boiled down to the Ten Commandments, is the basic law of all laws regulating the human relationships. On the one hand, the commandments might seem simple and unassuming, but on the other hand, they are full of eternal philosophic sophistication and conceptual depth.

The Decalogue issued by the Rare Book from St. Petersburg publishers is the visual incarnation of the meaningfulness, austerity, and canonical beauty and charm of the Ten Commandments.

The book materials are truly unique: a rock brought from the Sinai Mount where Moses got the tablets from God; Egyptian papyrus, Jewish parchment, hand-cast designer’s paper, and silver. The text of the commandments, reproduced in Hebrew, Old Church Slavonic, Russian, and some other languages, was printed manually.

The unique edition will be displayed from October 14 to November 14, 2009 during the Second International Exhibition of Calligraphy in Sokolniki Park.
