Creating inspiration for the New Year

Last Sunday, December 25th, the Brushes and Brush Pen Calligraphy workshop was held at the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy.

The workshop was presented by Darina Biryulina, a young calligrapher, designer and graphic artist from Saint Petersburg. Darina shared her views on why calligraphy has been getting popular again; explained the difference between calligraphy and lettering; and demonstrated how to work with brushes and brush pen. When working with such instruments and materials as brushes, nib, and ink – those that have their own soul and spirit – one can’t help fully immersing into the process. The participants covered many sheets with all sorts of lines and letters before capturing a style they felt most comfortable with. Darina insisted everyone should go with their gut and improvise: she believes that a sincere and authentic expression of emotions is more important than following the rules.

Finally, Darina suggested everyone select three pieces they particularly liked and arrange them into a collage, placing them into a mount. She supplied personal advice for each participant, and they left the museum equipped with this knowledge to finish the work at home and enter the New Year fully prepared and ready for new accomplishments.

We thank everyone for coming and look forward to seeing all our visitors in the new year!
