December 13-14, 2008 . “Calligraphic Gamuts as the Basis of the Art”. “How Instruments Influence Calligrapher’s Expressive Means”. Master classes of Pyotr Chobitko, member of the Union of Artists of Russia.

Pyotr Petrovich Chobitko, a famous calligrapher and teacher, is the Chairman of the National Union of Calligraphers and the creator of the first handwritten Constitution of the Russian Federation.

Mr. Chobitko, who has been studying the history of fonts for 35 years, had much to tell his listeners, who were all ears. In his lectures on the basics of the art of calligraphy and calligraphic tools he introduced the audience to the ground principles of the art of refined handwriting. The unceasing attention to the master’s every word was fueled by the fact he is the man who had created a unique handwritten copy of the Constitution of the Russian Federation in 5 months, out of a heap of Italian paper and ink, all by himself!

According to Mr. Chobitko, he changed many a pen during this 5 month calligraphic marathon. Can an amateur distinguish where the master used a goose-quill pen and where he used a metal pen. Is there any difference at all? What should you choose a brush or a pen? How can this choice influence the moulding of the author’s design? What consequences might the wrong choice of instrument lead to? No doubt, Professor Chobitko had the answers to all these questions. And he was eager to share his knowledge with his guests.
