Young people take an interest in Chinese calligraphy
Once an old folk’s hobby, the art of Chinese calligraphy is growing in popularity among the younger generation.
The large number of participants, particularly primary and secondary school students, at the recent calligraphy competition organized by the Miri Chinese Calligraphy and Cultural Society, spoke of the escalating popularity among the Chinese community here.
«Writing fine calligraphy calls for regular practice to produce a stable hand. The expressive brush strokes and harmonious rhythm of the composition depends on one’s artistic inclination,» said the society’s president Ting Nai Ho.
Ting pointed out that parents should encourage their children to take up calligraphy which helps shape their character and personality.
«Besides appreciating the art, it is a good way to introduce ancestral culture to the younger generation,» said Ting, a co-founder of the society.
The calligraphy competition and exhibition held at Permymall last Sunday drew a crowd.
The Miri Chinese Calligraphy and Cultural Society, established in March 2011, was meant to introduce and produce more calligraphers among the Chinese community.
In the past three years, the society has been collaborating with various associations and schools to organize courses, competitions and exhibitions on Chinese calligraphy.
