A chosen Chinese hieroglyph was announced in Japan to symbolize the outgoing year. This event is held annually and provokes huge interest among the islanders. This year, they have sent more than 170000 offers.

According to NHK, Japan Broadcasting Corporation, the results have shown that a hieroglyph which means ‘circle’ or ‘ring’ will become the symbol of 2013. It was offered 9518 times.

Seyhan Mori, Chief rector explained that Tokyo was chosen to host the 2020 Olympic Games, and it has become a major consideration when selecting a hieroglyph to represent the outgoing year. The chosen Chinese hieroglyph is used to write the Japanese word ‘gorin’, which means ‘five rings’ of the Olympic emblem.

The hieroglyph itself is read as ‘wa’ or ‘rin’. Kiyomidzu, Chief priest of a temple in Kyoto wrote this hieroglyph using a brush for calligraphy on a sheet of traditional Japanese paper called ‘washi’ during the well-known ceremony of the outgoing year.
