The etching exhibition and presentation of a book by Appolinaria Mishina in Belarus

From May, 19th to June, 10th, 2015 the Labyrinth Gallery of the National Library of Belarus will host a solo exhibition of the permanent participant of The International Exhibition of Calligraphy Appolinaria Mishina.

Appolinaria has accomplished a unique project: a calligraphy book «The Gospel According to St. Mark» with colour etching technique artwork and parallel text handwritten in Church Slavonic and Russian in a Synodal translation.

The Gospel of St. Mark is one of the four canonical gospels, considered the earliest of them and the most important book of the New Testament.

The author’s series of artwork for The Gospel of St. Mark consists of 155 pages and 104 leaf-gold illuminated miniatures inside the manuscript. The handwritten part of the book was written with the silk-screening technique with the specially designed script based on half -uncial script.

The project of Appolinaria Mishina is a synthesis of traditional and contemporary art. «Being a calligraphy artist I wanted to find a specific authentic ‘sound’ while rendering the evangelic text», the author explains.

The work was highly praised by the Russian Orthodox Church. The art project was completely reprinted and published by the Vita Nova publishing house in St. Petersburg. One of the first presentations of the project will take place in the National Library in Minsk, Belarus. The very first one took place during the opening ceremony of the 5th International Exhibition of Calligraphy at the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy in Moscow.

The exhibition in Minsk is organized for copyrighted books enthusiasts by the National Library of Belarus in association with the Book Salon art gallery in Minsk.
