The chance to develop calligraphy art beckons

Only last week, VAC signed a fresh cultural exchange programme with China’s Nanjing Institute of Calligraphy and Painting.

The new collaboration will see artists from the two countries benefit from a series of artistic skills and cultural exchange programmes.

There is a completely new and interesting façade to the VAC and Nanjing Arts Institute partnership — the component of calligraphy.

While painting has been one of the traditional features on the Zambian art scene, calligraphy has conspicuously been missing.

With that creative void, Zambian artists will learn a lot from their Chinese counterparts, who have long-standing experience in the art of calligraphy.

Calligraphy is common and has widely been practised in China since ancient times. This graphic-oriented art form is strongly rooted in Chinese visual culture.

Speaking during the signing ceremony of the cultural agreement in Lusaka, artist Eddie Mumba, who signed on behalf of VAC, said the partnership with Nanjing Institute of Calligraphy and Painting is a positive development that will foster visual arts in Zambia.

«Calligraphy is one exceptional skill that will empower our local artists. The benefits for our artists from this partnership is quite immense,» said the visibly excited Mumba.
