An exhibition of modern Islamic design is to open in Kazan
For the very first time the Victoria and Albert Museum (the V&A, London), the world’s leading art and design museum, is bringing an exhibition to Russia: Kazan and Moscow. The exhibition consists of works by the painters and designers, finalists of Jameel Prize, the international modern art and design competition inspired by the Islamic tradition. The exhibition will open in Kazan on Wednesday and will run within the framework of events on cultural exchange within the UK-Russia Year of Culture (2014).
As the organizers reported, almost 270 candidates from all over the globe participated in the Jameel Prize 3 competition. This year there were also applications submitted from Algeria, Brazil, Norway and Russia for the first time ever. As a result the jury selected ten finalists among painters and designers. Their works will be showcased at the Hermitage-Kazan Exhibition Center on the premises of the Kazan Kremlin State Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve.
«The Jameel Prize 3 exhibition in Kazan will feature over twenty exhibits which are to showcase the diversity of work by the authors included in the competition short list. The exposition includes it all: modern style of Arabic fonts and calligraphy as well as dresses, inspired by architectural elements of mosques and palaces; video installations and precious textile featuring fine paintings», — the Kazan Kremlin press service reports.
Twice a year the winner of the competition receives prize money in the amount of £ 25,000. The Jameel Prize originators explain the aim of the exhibition in boosting painters all around the world to «keep learning the originals of Islam and the role of Islamic tradition in modern life through modern design, art, craft and other ways».
The V&A Jameel Prize 3 exhibition is held with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Tatarstan. The exposition will be open until August 17th. Later on, from October 10th to November 23rd, the exhibition of modern Islamic art will be unveiled in the New Manege Moscow State Exhibition Hall in Moscow.
