Sokolniki MEC and the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy hosted a participant of the first American National Exhibition 1959 held in Sokolniki

On July 24, 2009, the management of the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy under Sokolniki Museum-Educational Complex met with a participant of the American National Exhibition held in Moscow’s Sokolniki Park in 1959 within the framework of the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary thereof.

We met with Yuri Lepanov, Khrushchev’s personal interpreter. He recalled many interesting stories and details of the past show, and by the way commented on the legendary “Kitchen Debate” between the Nikita Khrushchev, First Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee and Richard Nixon, American President-to-be.

Fifty years ago, on July 24th, 1959, for the first time ever in the history of Russian-American relations the American National Exhibition was held in Moscow, being a great contribution to further relations between the two countries in the state of Cold War. The exhibition was sponsored by the US government, and it followed a similar Soviet Exhibit in New York City earlier that year. It featured many displays of the latest home appliances, fashions, television and hi-fi sets. Nikita Khrushchyov and Richard Nixon personally attended the event.

Sokolniki has been a major venue for international exhibitions. Sokolniki MEC is honored to keep these good traditions.
