The Holy Spring of Sergius of Radonezh – a good beginning of the International Exhibition of Calligraphy

On May 21st, 2008, Alexey Shaburov, General Manager of the International Exhibition of Calligraphy, Pyotr Chobitko, and Andrei Kostrov visited the Holy Spring of Sergius of Radonezh called Gremyachy klyuch (the Thundering Spring).

It is very hard to get to this holy spring, but it was important to go there to get inspiration for realization of Sokolniki MEC’s patriotic project.

According to legend, six hundred years ago on his way from The Holy Trinity Lavra to the town of Kirzhach Saint Sergius stayed here for a long time. He started his every day with one and the same prayer asking for strong will and awakened mind to be granted to the Russian people. One day a spring bubbled up out of the rock as a token that his prayers had been heard.

Today anyone can drink and take some holy water from it.

Rushing from a limestone crevice the water flows along an oak half-trunk and falls on a wooden platform.

Not a single pilgrim’s soul is stirred with doubt in the sanctity of the place. The abandoned art of calligraphy revived by Sokolniki MEC thus receives blessing in this historic place.
