Born in 1967 and coming from an educated and artistic family, Bahman Panahi spent his childhood surrounded by music, painting and calligraphy thanks to his brothers“ artistic studies.
He decided to study music and calligraphy which he chose as his profession. Music introduced him to Iranian history, culture, and civilization, whereas calligraphy inoculated him with eternal craving for creativity and Iranian style. The existing relation between the two spheres became a principle source of interest and occupation for him.
Having studied the basics of traditional Iranian music through playing the “sitar”, he dedicated himself to calligraphy and got his graduate diploma from the Association of Iranian Calligraphers, the most prominent centre of calligraphy in Iran. He completed his studies with the greatest masters of calligraphy working in the Association, Gholam Hossein Amirkhani, Abdollah Foradi and Kaboli.
In 1985 he successfully entered the Teheran University, Department of Fine Arts. His academic studies led him to the realm of world art and culture, introducing him to contemporary artistic trends as well.
Meanwhile, apart from the sitar he took up playing the tar and further developed his musical education with such illustrious Iranian folk musicians as Houshang Zarif, Mohamad Reza Lotfi and Ataolah Zahed Shirazi.
In 1990 he formed a traditional Iranian music band called “Voyage”.
Since 1995 he has given group and solo concerts, held exhibitions and workshops on music and calligraphy, as well as organized courses in Iran, France, India, the Maldives, Belgium, the Netherlands, England, Syria, Sri Lanka, Tunis, Morocco, Nigeria, Spain, Mauritania, Poland, Cuba, Switzerland, and the USA.
He has lived in France since 2002. After graduating from the School of Fine Arts in Valanciennes he continued his post-graduate studies at Sorbonne, Paris. In his research paper “Musicality of Lines and Points” he attempted to trace the existing relations between calligraphy and music through modern art.
