The International Exhibition of Calligraphy

Sokolniki exhibition centre, October 15th – November 14th

“Calligraphy is the art of putting the brush on paper properly, and then to properly take it off”, says one calligrapher. “It is so. But the written text is not only to make an effective impression”, says another. “Apart from technical skillfulness, one needs naturalness, inspiration and a presence of spontaneous natural force”. The ancient art of “beautiful handwriting” is still disputed among contemporary calligraphers. The Sokolniki centre has gathered calligraphers from more than 30 countries. The territory of 4, 000 sq.m. demonstrates the contemporary world of calligraphy, historic specimens of script texts, writing utensils and the calligrapher’s working place. The surprise of the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy and the unique sacral calligraphy masterpiece from the Guinness World Records is the so-called World Famous Mezuzah, written on parchment by a renowned calligrapher from Jerusalem, Abraham Hersh-Borshevsky.
