The Vibrant Lettering Work Of This Mexican Artist Is Taking Over Brooklyn
Meet Ricardo Gonzalez, a talented 28-year-old Mexican designer born in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua and raised in Durango. Currently residing in Brooklyn, Gonzalez has turned his passion for lettering, typography and calligraphy into a real way of life.
"My first approach to typography was when I read the letters my grandfather used to write. But I never imagined that such event would be the start of what I do today."
Ricardo, like many other contemporary artists, developed his passion for lettering from graffiti. He started with marker "tags" and at some point ended up being lucky enough to make a living from what he considered a hobby.
The artist uses calligraphy, color, and visual dynamism to write ambiguous phrases that mean something personal to him, but that can also be interpreted differently by other people.
Among his main influences, Ricardo mentions his brother Adrian Gonzalez, poet Octavio Paz, rapper MF Doom, Beach House, digital artist Alex Trochut, lettering artist Erik Marinovich and Mexican typographer Miguel Reyes.
In his most recent projects, Ricardo has been exploring language through the use of cognates, which are "words that are similar in spelling, pronunciation, and meaning, making it easy to understand them in two or more different languages."
