Moscow will see Russia’s first museum of calligraphy

Before long, Moscow will see the country’s first museum dedicated to the art of beautiful handwriting: the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy. According to the organizers, the museum will be opened in Sokolniki Park.

Calligraphy museums are established all over the world, e.g. in Turkey, China, Japan, and the United Arab Emirates whereas Russia did not have any similar institutions. The organizers promise the exposition of the new museum will feature many interesting samples of Slavonic and European writing styles, Russian and foreign manuals on calligraphy, rare single-copy handwritten editions, the writing utensils of old and of the present, Jewish calligraphy.

The core of the exposition includes eighty works presented by calligraphy gurus from Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Germany, France, Israel, Syria, USA, Japan, China, etc. Each of the pieces is a sample of the age-long art incorporating traditions and experience of generations of masters. Visitors will also have an opportunity to appreciate the works of apprentice calligraphers, those who have just begun their glorious ascent under the guidance of their masters.
