Ğabdulla Tuqay in the Strokes of Calligraphy Meeting took place in Kazan

There was probably nowhere to hide from the cheerful crowds in the capital of Tatarstan last weekend: the city was celebrating the birthday of the famous Tatar poet Ğabdulla Tuqay and Mother Language Day.

The Museum of the Islam Culture also joined the celebration: last weekend, it hosted a meeting with Najip Nakkash, a Tatar calligrapher, who was one of the first people to revive the traditions of the forgotten, yet beautiful Tatar šamail.

His pieces are bright, original and full of national character, which brings a lot of Tatar strokes to traditional Islamic art.

As part of the celebrations of Mother Language Day and the Ğabdulla Tuqay’s birthday, the calligrapher presented to the public his latest pieces, which fascinated the viewers with their simplicity, utmost beauty and elegance, bringing back childhood memories, when mothers were putting their children to sleep and reading poems of the great Tatar poet.

The master of the Tatar šamail stayed long after the meeting was over to speak with his admirers.
