Workshop on Vyaz

June 10th the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy will hold a workshop on one of the most decorative writings – Vyaz.

Vyaz, or Slavic ligatured writing, has been popular in Russ once late 14th century. It was used to decorate books, household objects, and pieces of architecture. Vyaz had many varieties depending on the surfaces it was applied to: the script used in books differed from the one carved in stone or bone, or sewn on cloth, or painted on wood. Thus, there were many varieties of Vyaz to be found in different cultural centres of the Old Rus, and by 17th century, scribes could select among over a hundred variations of this popular script. Today, Vyaz experiences a new wave of popularity – all due to its deep expressive powers and opportunity for experiment.

At our workshop you will learn the basics of the traditional Russian Vyaz, the rules of ligatures, try writing ligatured letters, and create your own unique ligatured phrase. The instrument for this kind of script is the broad nib pen.

At the workshop, you will have a chance to realize your artistic ambitions as well as to develop your sense of rhythm and hand-eye coordination.

Don’t miss it! Saturday, June 10th.
